Grafitti remix

July 8th, 2006

I like graffiti when it’s an image, not just a tag. It can brighten up an otherwise ugly or boring part of town. This one, by an unknown artist, started as a bird, and the cassette (mixtape?) was added later, probably to cover up someone else’s tag.

I particularly like how the bird’s foot extends onto the sidewalk.

can’t dance? …ASK DON

In keeping with the recent trend of blogging about art that ISN’T mine; some cool graffiti that was just a short walk from my home. Sadly the powers that be decided a white square would look more attractive in that spot.

Golden Age comic art

June 9th, 2006

I recently bought this piece of golden age art from the Iger shop. The artist might be Klaus Nordling or Jack Kamen or someone else. It’s a page from an issue of the National Comics publication Kid Dixon, from some time in the 1940s.

Kid Dixon

I especially like the expressionistic frames and the wonderful large face drawn with fine lines and a thick outline. If anyone knows what issue this came from, or what artist drew it for sure, please contact me.

UPDATE: After some research, this looks very much like Jack Kamen’s work in the Inspector Dayton comic strip.

The return of ObjektSynth!

March 10th, 2006

I helped create this software synth which is now released for the Zeta operating system: ObjektSynth.

I also designed the logo :-)

ObjektSynth

Not bad for 1996.

The Silver Surfer

Silver Surfer
Based this on a 1960s Jack Kirby drawing inked by Joe Sinnott. I supposed I should mention Silver Surfer is copyright and TM Marvel Comics.

Xmas card

December 23rd, 2005

Here’s my Xmas card (took me long enough)

It’s based on an old Captain Midnight comic book from 1947. I redrew it, adding all the Christmas references. The original art is about 11″ x 16.5″.

“I SAW A SQUIRREL!”

September 14th, 2005

Latlely I’ve been looking at dozens of books on drawing manga. I’ve purchased 3 so far! The best of one is called Draw Your Own Manga: All the Basics (click). Read through the 6-page online excerpt (click) You won’t be sorry ^__^ It has a squirrel :D

Meet Mr. Robohead

September 4th, 2005

Yep, another robot head. Gotta love it!

Update: Obviously there are some serious gaps in my comic book knowledge. This is based on the character “Machine Man” by Jack Kirby.

Online Portfolio

July 21st, 2005

Today I ran into a friend from college I hadn’t seen in several years, Guy Budziak. He’s an artist as well as a comic book scholar. I told him to check out my site, and it occurred to me that I should probably have some more examples of my illustrations in an easy-to-find location. :)

These are images that appear in various other places on the web. These are all done starting with a pencil drawing which is then scanned and manipulated in various ways in Photoshop. Older ones first, newer ones last.

Cory Doctorow Comes to Town, Cory Doctorow Leaves Town (ha ha)

July 14th, 2005

Fellow Sci-fi author ;-) and blogger Cory Doctorow came to Detroit back in April and, among other things, gave a talk about the “STATE OF THE COPYFIGHT,” all about P2P file sharing and spying on computer users. I made this illustration that appeared on a promotional flier for the event.

I would’ve liked to attend the talk and maybe meet Cory, but I was unable to do so. I understand he liked my drawing.
